Botulinum toxin A, more commonly referred to simply as Botox, is a common injectable treatment used to soften fine lines and wrinkles. It works by reducing the muscle contractions that cause wrinkles and instead relaxes the facial muscles to yield a more youthful appearance.

Botox is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum, which is a naturally-occurring substance in soil, lakes, the intestinal tracts of mammals, and within the organs of shellfish. Because it is a neurotoxin, Botox disrupts nervous system processes. In extremely small concentrations, it can be used to disrupt the chemical messenger, acetylcholine, responsible for muscle contraction. By inhibiting muscle contractions, Botox prevents facial muscles from contracting and causing wrinkles. Because Botox can relax facial muscles, it can also be used to treat other conditions such as migraines, TMJ pain, and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).

Is Botox safe?

Yes, Botox is safe and has been approved by the FDA since 1989. Since then, it is the most commonly used injectable treatment for eliminating or reducing wrinkles. However, like any other medical treatment, Botox may have a few side effects. These side effects are usually minor and can include redness, swelling, discomfort, tenderness, or bruising.

What can I expect when receiving Botox treatments?

When receiving Botox treatments, you can expect to have a series of injections in the affected area. The total number of injections will depend upon your treatment goals and the location. After treatment, it generally takes about 24-72 hours before you will notice the results, however it can take up to 5 days to see the full effect.

What should I expect during a Dysport treatment?

Dysport treatments are performed from the comfort of a Medi-Spa office. Most treatments take only minutes to complete using a series of tiny injections around targeted facial muscles. Though there may be some initial soreness at the injection site, most people experience little or no bruising after a Dysport treatment. In most cases, patients can return to work or other activities immediately after treatment. It is important, however, to avoid apply pressure to the treatment site or sleeping on it for the first 24 hours after getting Dysport injections.

How long do Dysport treatment results last?

Most people notice improvements in lines and wrinkles within just 1 to 3 days of receiving a Dysport injection though maximum benefits may not be realized for a week or more. Outcomes vary from person to person, but most people enjoy the benefits of Dysport for approximately 3 to 6 months.


Botox and Xeomin are two types of injectable neurotoxins (forms of botulinum toxin type A) that have been approved by the FDA for minimizing fine lines and wrinkles. Many people think that Botox and Xeomin are basically the same thing. Probably the biggest myth about Xeomin is that it is simply a cheap and generic version of Botox.  In reality, there are some significant differences between the two products.

The main difference between Xeomin and Botox has to do with the formulation. Xeomin is a “naked” neurotoxin. That is, Xeomin contains only a single ingredient (botulinum toxin A), while the formulation of Botox includes various protective proteins clustered around the active molecule. The benefit of Xeomin’s pure-form means users have a lower chance of developing resistance (antibodies) that can limit its desired effects.

Another difference between Botox and Xeomin is the onset of results. While the results of both treatments last for about the same duration (3-6 months), Xeomin requires up to 4 days for results to fully form, while Botox typically only requires about 72 hours.
