What Is Juvederm?

A family of injectable fillers from Allergan (the makers of Botox), Juvéderm harnesses one of the body’s most important skin-plumbing elements: hyaluronic acid. Naturally found in skin, hyaluronic acid (HA) has a remarkable ability to attract and maintain moisture in skin tissue, holding up to 1,000 times its weight in water. With this hyaluronic acid-based filler, Juvederm effectively restores lost volume, enhances facial contours, smooths lines and wrinkles, softens creases, augments lips, and reduces the appearance of indentations caused by acne scars. With a cross-linked formula of connected molecule chains, Juvederm’s synthetic form of hyaluronic acid stays tightly clumped together to slow the absorption rate for long-lasting results. Approved by the FDA in 2006, each Juvederm brand of formulation has its specific bonding properties, concentrations, purpose, and longevity customized to target specific skin problems. Each treatment can be used individually or in conjunction with other Juvederm products.

How Juvederm Works Info Graphic

How Does IT Work?

The most popular dermal filler, Juvederm, is a gel-like substance formulated of synthetic hyaluronic acid, which is a polysaccharide (sugar), that the body naturally produces. Its primary function is to replenish the skin’s nutrients, drawing moisture into the tissues. As we age, the production of hyaluronic acid, elastin, and collagen decreases, causing lines, wrinkles, and hollowed-out features. When injected gently into the skin, Juvederm’s line of dermal fillers work to add volume back to facial tissue, stimulating the production of collagen. To help minimize any discomfort, Juvederm injections contain a small amount of lidocaine to numb the area instantly. If you’re still concerned, we can also apply a topical numbing cream or ice to further numb the area.

During the procedure, we’ll thoroughly cleanse the face and mark the indicated treatment areas. When you’re comfortable, we’ll slowly and delicately inject Juvederm into the areas of concern, massaging it lightly to ensure even distribution. The results are almost immediate and will continue to improve with time as the gel settles in and triggers collagen production. After your Juvederm appointment, you can return to your normal routine. Some patients may experience mild bruising (which can be concealed with makeup) and possible swelling around the injections sites. Over time, the body absorbs the hyaluronic acid and a second treatment should be considered around 9-12 months, sometimes longer, to keep up with the benefits of a more youthful appearance.

What Juvederm's line Does

Juvederm’s line of dermal fillers include Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, Juvederm Volbella, Juvederm Voluma, and Juvederm Vollure, which reduce the signs of aging to restore a refreshed, younger version of you. A quick, non-invasive procedure, Juvederm is an excellent solution for both men and women who suffer from smoker’s lines, smile lines, marionette lines, or lipstick lines; thinning lips; loss of cheek volume; and nasolabial folds. For dramatic, age-defying results associated with a liquid facelift, it’s recommended that patients combine their treatment with Botox or other wrinkle relaxers.

Juvederm Treatment Cost

The cost of Juvederm depends on the amount needed to achieve a patient’s desired results. Juvederm comes pre-loaded in a .08cc syringe with a hologram sticker around the syringe portion and another sticker indicating the lot number and expiration date. We will open the sealed packaging in the treatment room in front of you (so you know it’s genuine Juvéderm) and place the labels in your patient chart. Some patients may need only a fraction of the syringe, while others with deeper lines and folds may need even more. If any product is left over, it can be used to treat other areas of the face. For a better price estimate, it’s best to schedule a free consultation to determine the amount required for your aesthetic goals.

Juvéderm fillers come in different formulations that are approved to add volume to cheeks, smooth parentheses lines, enhance lip volume, and smooth vertical lip lines.
Juvederm Voluma is an injectable gel designed for penetration deep into the cheek area to correct age-related volume loss. It is also used for chin augmentations in adults.
Juvederm Vollure is injected into the facial tissue to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, more commonly referred to as smile lines.
Juvederm Volbella is a hyaluronic acid gel injected into the lips for lip augmentation in adults.
Juvederm Ultra is injected into the lips and perioral area for lip augmentation in adults.
Juvederm dermal fillers are made from a modified hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced by your body to give structure, deliver nutrients, retain your skin’s moisture and softness.
Hyaluronic acid fillers are formulated with different viscosities. Thicker formulas tend to last longer. As a rule of thumb, you can expect fillers to last somewhere between 6–9months. Fillers can last longer with maintenance procedures referred to as “top-up treatments.” These mini sessions keep your skin looking just as fresh year-round.
Juvederm was not developed to boost collagen, but filler treatments may encourage new collagen production. If you are interested in collagen stimulants, consider other treatments like Sculptra, fractional laser resurfacing, IPL microneedling, and PRP.
Juvederm mimics your body’s production of hyaluronic acid, which means results are immediate, and you’ll leave our office looking fabulous.

About Juvederm

About Juvederm

Okay. I'm ready to reverse the hands of time.

Before any procedure can be administered, you will have a consultation with one of our health advisors. We will discuss any medical conditions you might have and any aesthetic goals you would like to achieve.
Most filler treatments take about 10 minutes. If you plan to correct multiple treatment zones, you can expect the procedure to take longer.
Treatment areas will be disinfected by one of our clinicians. Juvederm will then be injected using a fine needle to enhance facial features. Your injections specialist may gently massage your skin to ensure optimal smoothness.
Most people don’t complain about any pain, while others may experience mild discomfort. Juvederm fillers labeled with “XC” contain lidocaine, a pain-reducing additive. For others that are pain-intolerant, we can apply a topical numbing cream to improve your experience significantly.
As time passes, your body slowly absorbs hyaluronic acid, causing the treated areas to lose their fullness. Top-up treatments are mini injections applied to the treatment areas to restore your procedure’s full effect. Juvederm can last up to 36 months with continued top-up treatments.
For the first 24 hours, you should avoid applying makeup. After that, you should be good to go. If you are experiencing any bruising, consider using a concealer with a yellowish tone. For redness, choose a concealer with a greenish-yellow tint.
Typically, you can return to your normal daily routine post-filler. Some people experience a little tenderness, mild bruising, or possibly some post-procedure swelling. Gently icing the treated area can help to reduce any discomfort.
Yes. There is nothing to keep you from having a responsible drink after receiving Juvederm injections.
You should look pretty fantastic right out of the gate. Any redness, swelling, or bruising should disappear over the next few weeks, leaving you looking youthful and refreshed. Over time, your body will absorb hyaluronic acid-based fillers, lessening the original effect of your Juvederm treatment. For this, we recommend “top-up” mini treatments to restore your full procedure.
All of these are high-quality dermal fillers that work similarly. Each brand of filler brings its unique advantages. If uncertain which filler is right for you, please call to schedule a free consultation. One of our aesthetic specialists will help you choose the best dermal filler for your beauty needs.
Typically, filler treatments require no downtime. Your clinician will review our post-treatment guidelines to ensure your safety and the treatment’s success. It is not uncommon to experience some mild discomfort, swelling, bruising, or tenderness after injections. Any symptoms will usually fade over the next couple of weeks.
Your body absorbs dermal fillers over time. We suggest small tune-up injections called “top-up treatments” to keep your youthful appearance looking fresh. We typically schedule these follow-ups somewhere between 4–9 months post-procedure.

Juvederm Precautions

Juvederm Precautions

Concerns you might have about Juvederm treatments.

The most commonly reported side effects include redness, swelling, discomfort, tenderness, firmness, bumps, bruising, discolorations, and possible itching. Any symptoms should clear up within 14 days. Be sure to discuss any potential side effects and treatments risks with one of our healthcare practitioners.

You should avoid injectable fillers if you have a history of severe allergic reactions to lidocaine or hyaluronic acid. Allergic reactions like anaphylaxis are serious and could be life-threatening.

The safety of Juvederm products have not been evaluated for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. We strongly discourage anyone who is trying to conceive or who could be pregnant from getting dermal fillers. During pregnancy, your healthy body will experience an increase in hormones that encourage growth. On its own, your skin will likely develop a beautiful, natural, healthy glow during your pregnancy.

We may not be able to slow the hands of time, but we can help with your fountain (or syringe) of youth. Both men and women can enjoy improved skin texture, facial rejuvenation, restore lost volume (even in the lips), and provide a subtle lift. Because hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the body, the chance of allergic reaction is minimal. If for some reason, you don't like the results or have a complication (it's never happened in our office), Juvederm can always be dissolved with hyaluronidase, a natural enzyme found in your body.
