Imagine the freedom and extra time you’d save if you didn’t have to shave. Well, I guess you don’t have to— but we do it anyway— or do we? One of the most hated beauty rituals, women spend roughly 72 days (1,728 hours) of their lifetime shaving their legs. Unwanted hair can be a thing of the past. Wouldn’t it be nice not to deal with stubble, razor burn, nicks, and ingrown hairs? Not waxing (let’s not go there– ouch!); there’s something better.

The Palomar Icon Laser offers a long-term solution for unwanted body hair. This non-invasive procedure has been proven safe and effective for use on all regions of the body, including delicate skin on the face and bikini area. The laser targets melanin pigments in the hair follicles, which absorb the laser’s heat, destroying the hair. Simultaneously, the system applies a cooling technology to keep the patient comfortable while protecting the surrounding tissue.

What Is Laser Hair Removal?

One of the most common cosmetic procedures, Laser Hair Removal, removes unwanted hair from the face, legs, back, arms, bikini area (ahem— Brazilian), and other areas that are annoyingly time-consuming or difficult to shave or wax. Patients with lighter skin and darker hair are better candidates because the contrast makes it easier for the laser to target the hair’s pigment. Perfect for people with embarrassing excess body hair, the laser uses highly-concentrated beams of light that reach up to 100 degrees Celsius (200 degrees Fahrenheit) to target the pigment in the hair follicle. With built-in Advanced Contact Cooling, the laser maintains a constant 5-degree Celsius (41 degrees Fahrenheit) temperature, so patients remain comfortable during the duration of the procedure. The pigment absorbs the light and destroys the hair, leaving your skin smooth and stubble-free. If you’re tired of shaving every day or spending way too much on waxing that only lasts a few weeks (at best), consider a permanent solution for your hair removal — laser hair removal at Premier Medical Aesthetics.

Laser Hair Removal Process

Patients seeking laser hair removal should be in good health and able to handle some mild discomfort.

4-Weeks Before Treatment

WHAT TO AVOID

Do not wax, tweeze, bleach, use depilatory hair removal creams, or use electrolysis on the treatment area. It can reduce the effectiveness of the laser hair removal treatment. Avoid direct sun exposure. If unavoidable, use a minimum of SPF 30.

AVOID TANNING

Stop tanning, including tanning beds (seriously—don’t even go there?!), self-tanning creams, lotions, and sprays.

SHAVE…but I hate shaving.

Shave the treatment area the morning of your scheduled appointment, unless instructed otherwise. If you cannot shave the area, one of our nurses will shave the area for an additional $50 charge.

IT’S SHOW TIME

Remove any lotions, make-up, and deodorants before treatment. Wear loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the treatment area and doesn’t irritate the skin.

PREPARATION

We’ll thoroughly cleanse the treatment area, making sure to remove any residual make-up, sunblock, or lotions. For your comfort, a topical numbing cream is applied, allowing time to penetrate the skin.

LASER TIME

Using our Skintel Melanin Reader, we’ll adjust the laser in relation to the color, thickness, and location of the hair being treated as well as your skin color to achieve optimal results. Some patients claim it feels like a light rubber band snapping or a sunburn-like sting. There may be an occasional sulfurous smell from the keratin as the hair vaporizes from the laser’s energy.
During Procedure

After Procedure

IMMEDIATELY AFTER

The treated area may appear red, irritated, and swollen like a sunburn. Apply ice packs or cold aloe vera gel to soothe. Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and depilatory creams until your treatments are complete.

24-Hours After Procedure

THE NEXT DAY

Avoid hot showers, saunas, hot tubs, swimming, or other strenuous sports for 2-3 days or until any redness has resolved. Do not shave the treated area for 1-3 days. As long as there is no redness, blistering, or scabbing, you can apply makeup, lotion, and resume shaving. The treated area is very delicate; treat it with care.
24-Hours After Procedure

2-3 Days After Procedure

IT’S NORMAL

You may experience “hair shedding” or hair expelled from the skin for the first few days; sometimes mistaken for hair growth. Do not wax, tweeze, bleach, use depilatory hair removal creams, or use electrolysis on the treatment area until the course of treatments are complete.

WHEN TO CALL

If scabbing, blistering, or signs of infection occur, please contact our office at (760) 642-7014. You can also call us if you have any other concerns.

HAIR GROWTH

You should expect a reduction of hair in the treatment area immediately after. After laser hair removal, you may begin to see new hair growth in 2-8 weeks. It typically takes between 3-8 sessions for permanent hair loss because we have to target hair at different growth cycles.

How Does IT Work?

Removing unwanted body hair with a laser involves using a specialized device designed to target and destroy the hair follicle to prevent hair from growing back. The treatment times vary depending on the size and scope of the treatment area. Smaller areas like the chin or ears take a lot less time than larger areas like the legs or back.

Using a melanin reader, we’ll optimize the laser’s settings to your skin color and hair thickness to ensure treatment efficacy. We’ll provide you with special eye protection to wear, so the laser’s brightness doesn’t damage your eyes. Using a test pulse on the treatment area, we’ll check for strength, your comfort level, and any other adverse reactions. The laser emits a concentrated beam of light (pulses of infrared diode energy) that transfers directly into heat or thermal energy, damaging the follicle (the area from which hair grows). The follicle absorbs the light attracted to the hair’s pigment and instantly zaps it away, damaging and making it difficult for the hair follicle to function. This targeted damage reduces and prevents future hair growth while protecting the skin and tissue surrounding the hair. There may be an occasional sulfurous or burning smell because hair contains keratin, which is composed of large amounts of cysteine, an amino acid containing sulfur.

What Laser Hair Removal Can Do

Laser hair removal gives you the freedom to have effortlessly smooth skin. Using the latest technology in hair removal, patients are ditching their razors and saying goodbye to painful waxing appointments. You can expect to see some hairs fall off immediately while hair under the epidermis could take up to 10 days to fall off. Hair has three distinct cycles: the anagen phase (the growth phase), the catagen phase (transitional phase triggering the end of growth), and the telogen phase (shedding phase). It’s important to catch your hair during the growth phase when follicles are active.

Laser Hair Removal Cost

Ranked as one of the top cosmetic treatments on Real Self, 91% say it’s “Worth It.” It’s difficult to estimate the price of laser hair removal without a consultation. Every patient is different, including the thickness, color, and fullness of the unwanted hair. Hair also grows in different cycles. Most people generally require 5-8 laser hair removal treatments staggered every 4-6 weeks in order to target the various stages of the growth cycle. Tired of shaving, call our office to schedule a free consultation. We can assess your unwanted hair and advise you on how many sessions are needed to obtain your desired results. We also offer discounts on packages of treatment sessions to help make the procedure more affordable.

Permanent hair removal is safely achieved through exposure to laser light pulses that destroy the hair follicle. Results are realized over multiple sessions.

Hair follicles are somewhat fragile and are relatively easily destroyed when exposed to pulses of laser light. Permanently damaged hair follicles can no longer regrow hair. Because your hair grows in different cycles, treatments take place over multiple sessions to ensure perfectly smooth hair-free skin.

When you consider the cost of razors, creams, and waxing over a lifetime, it’s a relative bargain. The cost of laser hair removal treatments will vary depending on the number of treatments required and the area to be treated. Larger areas like legs will require more time, thus will incur more expense. The cost will be covered during your consultation, be sure to bring up any concerns you may have at that time.

Very! The FDA approved this hair removal method in 1997, and treatments have been safely performed ever since. However, an experienced licensed clinician must perform the procedure to ensure the safety of your skin.

Yes! Laser hair removal is available to any healthy woman or man regardless of skin color or hair type. With that being said, people with light skin and dark hair will experience accelerated results.

With proper preparation and aftercare, permanent results are very achievable. However, some people may require periodic touch-up treatments. Results vary depending on your skin pigment and hair type.

Each person’s pain threshold is a litter different. Most people say it doesn’t hurt, and describe the feeling like a rubber band snapping against your sink for a fraction of a second. For people with more sensitive skin, we can apply a topical anesthetic (numbing cream).

For best results, stop plucking, waxing, and tanning six weeks before your laser hair removal treatment. Be sure not to take any medications like pain killers, blood thinners, and NSAIDs. Before treatment, shower and shave using a new razor. Do not apply any sunscreen, lotions, or moistures prior to treatment.

It’s all about time. Laser hair removal treats an area about the size of a quarter, while electrolysis affects only one hair at a time. This makes electrolysis very time-consuming. Keep in mind that some stubborn hair may require electrolysis to be permanently removed.

Laser technology for medical use began in 1961, but it wasn’t until the mid-1990s that it became commercially viable for hair removal. Since then, there continue to be significant advances in laser hair removal technology as each year passes.

The face and bikini line reign supreme for women, while it’s most definitely the back for men. But don’t let that keep you from inquiring about your unwanted hair; if you have some unwanted hair, we can help.

Nearly everywhere, the only area we can’t safely treat is the eyelids. Popular treatment areas include legs, bikini area, underarms, back, arms, chest, tummy, and upper lip. Some unexpected treatment areas include the forehead, ears, and nose. Look, the bottom line is if you want to be a hairless mole, we are onboard!

Some people get a little embarrassed about their first treatments, but we don’t. Whether you want a full Brazilian, a landing strip, or The Bermuda Triangle, trust me, we’ve done it hundreds of times before.

It is not uncommon for treated areas to look and feel a little sunburned. A cool compress and moisturizers can help to alleviate any discomfort. Over the next 30 days, the treated hair will fall out. Be sure to wear sunscreen during the first couple of months post-procedure; this will help ensure you do not experience skin pigmentation changes.

The exact number of sessions will depend much on your body and the area you want to treat. People with lighter skin and darker hair will experience the most immediate results.

An area the size of a quarter will only take a fraction of a second. Time will be much dependent on the zone you want to treat. Large areas like your legs or back may take up to an hour, while a smaller spot like the upper lip can be treated under 60 seconds.

No problem, we’ll dial back the procedure and sessions until we have left just the right amount of hair in place.

Concerns you might have about Laser Hair Removal.

Sometimes it’s best to lean on the side of caution. Though there is no supporting evidence to suggest it’s unsafe, there aren’t any long-term studies to declare it safe either. It’s best to wait till after childbirth before beginning laser hair removal. At that time, you may have other concerns you might want to discuss as well.

When performed by an experienced clinician, laser hair removal presents little to no risk. During your consultation, we will answer any concerns you may have and will address any risk that may be present.

Some people report mild symptoms of redness, itching, and swelling immediately following treatment. Any skin irritation should go away within a few hours; if you have concerns, consult your clinician about in-home skincare products to soothe the treatment area.
